Men of Letters within the Passes: Guanzhong Literati in Chinese History, 907-1911,和中英文期刊文章多篇。

Seeing Absence, Listening to Silence:
The Challenge of Reconstructing the Lives of the Chinese who Built the Transcontinental Railroad

Speaker:
Prof Shelley Fisher Fishkin

Joseph S. Atha Professor of Humanities & Professor of English,
Director of American Studies, Stanford University

Chair:
Prof Evelyn Hu-DeHart

Professor of History and American Studies, Brown University
Visiting Professor of History, NTU

Date:     19 May, 2016 (Thursday)
Time:     4.00pm to 5.30pm, followed by a reception
Venue:   NTU, Chinese Heritage Centre Auditorium, Level 2
.             12 Nanyang Drive Singapore 637721

Abstract:

Between 1865 and 1869, Chinese migrant workers toiled at a grueling pace and in perilous working conditions to help construct the first transcontinental railroad across North America. The railroad, which could not have been completed without Chinese labor, was the main source of the fortune with which Leland Stanford founded Stanford University. The history of the Chinese railroad workers is a transnational story that needs to be told from both the U.S. and Chinese perspectives. How do we reconstruct the lived experience of individuals who left no written records themselves? How do we fill in the broad gaps in the historical record? The Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project at Stanford University tries to reconstruct that story and share it. Co-Director of the Project Prof Fishkin will talk about the Project that gives a voice to Chinese railroad workers through an online digital archive of printed materials, digital visualizations, and exhibits.

Chinese Education Models in a Global Age

Speaker

Discussant
A/P Deng Zongyi (CTL)

Date: 12 May 2016

Time: 3.30pm to 5.00pm

Venue: National Institute of Education
             Block 2, 2/F, Seminar Room 2
             (NIE2-02-01) 1 Nanyang Walk Singapore 637616

Abstract

China's rise, the increasing emphasis on international benchmarking in education, and the global recognition of East Asian countries' success have brought the issue of Chinese education to the fore. Concretely, the concept of a "Chinese education model” has sparked debate and has become a major focus of education research worldwide. I will tackle this controversial issue by synthesising a diversity of perspectives from a forthcoming edited volume (Chou & Spangler, 2016) on the theme. This work reveals that Chinese education models, present in many different geographic and institutional contexts, shape social and institutional norms as well as belief systems and behaviours of individuals in China and beyond.

Biography

Prof. Chuing Prudence Chou received her PhD in Comparative and international Education from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She is a professor in the Department of Education at National Chengchi University (NCCU), Taiwan. Her research interests include comparative studies on international higher education reform, the impact of world-class university ranking, and cultural exchange in rival states. Her most recent volume co-edited with Jonathan Spangler is entitled Chinese Education Models in a Global Age (Springer, 2016)

SPANISH MANILA: A TRANS-PACIFIC MARITIME ENTERPRISE

From 1565 to 1815, galleon ships routinely made trans-Pacific roundtrip voyages, carrying American silver (mined in Mexico and Peru) to Manila. There, the largely Hokkien traders and settlers in the Parian, Manila’s Chinatown, acted as intermediaries in the trade of American silver precious commodities from the larger Indian Ocean and Nanyang world. Chinese and other Asian goods also made their way from Mexico across the Atlantic to Spain and Europe.

Join Dr Evelyn Hu-Dehart, Professor of history, American Studies and Ethnic Studies at Brown University, USA, as she shares the critical role of the Parian in the establishment of the global trading system.

Abstract
Asian Americans make up less than six percent of the U.S. population, yet more than one-fifth of the entering classes in prestigious universities like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. They are thus applauded as the model minority for their extraordinary levels of educational attainment by conservative pundits who fixate on Asian culture, traits, and values. In this public lecture, Prof Jennifer Lee and Prof Zhou Min, coauthors of a new book Asian American Achievement Paradox, will share their research findings and insight about the causes beyond culture and social psychological consequences of high achievement among Asian Americans, with a focus on Chinese Americans.

The Future of Growth in China: Fiscal Solutions for Structural Constraints

Speaker: Prof Salvatore Babones, University of Sydney

Date: Friday, 6 November 2015

Time: 3pm

Venue: HSS Conference Room (HSS-05-57)

Abstract

As China approaches middle income status, its rate of economic growth is slowing. In per capita terms, China will soon catch up with peer countries like Brazil, Mexico, and Russia, but will it surpass them? After three decades of rapid growth, China now faces the same kinds of structural constraints that these countries have faced for decades: a stagnant workforce, unequal urbanization, environmental depletion, tax avoidance, capital flight, brain drain, and a reluctance to invest in human infrastructure. These constraints combine to produce a fiscal crisis of the developmental state -- a crisis that hit all of these peer countries at similar stages in their development and is likely to hit China before the end of this decade. Contrary to conventional wisdom, neither further economic liberalization nor improved rule of law will alleviate this crisis. The real lesson of endogenous growth theory is that China can only break through the middle income trap through pro-poor structural reforms that require a substantial expansion of the fiscal capacity of the Chinese state.

This presentation is a synthesis of several short articles, most of which can be viewed on the website of Foreign Affairs magazine: https://www.foreignaffairs.com/authors/salvatore-babones

Immigration, Transnationalism, and Development: The State of the Question

With

Prof Alejandro Portes

Princeton University

Date: Thursday, 11th June 2015

Time: 1500 Hrs

Venue: Chinese Heritage Centre Auditorium (Level 2)

Abstract

This lecture will review the debate on the pros and cons of immigration for the development of sending countries. Immigrant organizations have seldom being considered part of this debate in the past, despite their considerable and growing significance. The concept of transnationalism brings into focus the manifold developmental initiatives toward their home countries undertaken by immigrants, both professionals and common workers. The growing importance of these initiatives puts an end to past debates on this topic, but introduces new ones linked to the growing participation and interference of national states in formerly migrant grassroots initiatives. The entry of sending and receiving states on the transnational field has changed it profoundly, giving rise to new issues and questions concerning its future developmental potential.

About the Speaker

Prof Alejandro Portes is Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor Emeritus of Sociology and the founding director of the Center for Migration and Development at Princeton University, and Research Professor of Law and Sociology at the University of Miami. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences. He has formerly taught at Johns Hopkins University, where he held the John Dewey Chair in Arts and Sciences; Duke University, and the University of Texas-Austin. He was the President of the American Sociological Association (ASA, 1998-99). Prof Portes is the author of more than 230 articles and chapters on national development, international migration, Latin American and Caribbean urbanization, economic sociology, the immigrant second generation, and immigrant transnational organizations. He has published 38 books and special issues. His books include City on the Edge: The Transformation of Miami (co-authored with Stepick), which won the Robert Park Award for best book in urban sociology and the Anthony Leeds Award for best book in urban anthropology in 1995; Legacies: The Story of the Immigrant Second Generation (co-authored with Rumbaut) which won the 2002 Distinguished Scholarship Award from the ASA and the 2002 W. I. Thomas and Florian Znaniecki Award for best book from ASA’s Section on International Migration; Immigrant America: A Portrait (co-authored with Rumbaut), which is in 4th edition and was designated as a Centennial Publication by the University of California Press in 1996; and Institutions Count: Their Role and Significance in Latin American Development (co-authored with Smith). He is one of the most cited sociologists in the world with over 69,805 Googlescholar citations and Googlescholar h-index of 99 and i10-index 279 as of 31st April 2015.

Taste, Culture and Nature: Connecting Cities with their Food Sources

With

Prof Richard Wilk

Professor of Anthropology @ Indiana University

Date: Friday, 10 April 2015

Time: 3:00pm

Venue: Chinese Heritage Centre, Auditorium Level 2

Abstract:

Taste is one sense that has not attracted a great deal of attention in the social sciences. Is the sense of taste socially constructed, a product of history and culture? Or is tasting a physiological activity that has evolved to guide humans to the most nutritious foods? In this paper I argue that however tastes are formed, they are crucially important in the structure of the global food economy, because taste so often has indirect and unintended consequences for natural environments and people thousands of kilometres away from the taster. New tastes and preferences do not emerge just anywhere; they are consistently generated in cities, and there is evidence that cities have been important sources of taste for thousands of years. But when products go through so many intermediary hands and organizations, they tend to acquire fictional or fanciful origins, and sometimes magical properties, cutting off the flow of information from the environment to the market. The price paid in the city for an exotic plant or animal may have very little relationship to the scarcity or value at the point of origin. In this paper I explore some of the commodity chains that bring food products from distant seas to the tables of diners in Singapore and other cities in East Asia. I find the naming and classification of foodstuffs to be particularly informative on this issue.

About the speaker:

Richard Wilk is Distinguished Professor of anthropology at Indiana University where he runs the new Food Research Centre, and a PhD program in Food and Culture. He has also taught at the University of California (Berkeley and Santa Cruz), New Mexico State University, and University College London and has held visiting professorships at Gothenburg University, the University of Mar-seille and the University of London. He has also worked as an applied anthropologist with UNICEF, USAID, Cultural Survival and a variety of other development organizations. Most recently he has testified as an expert witness in several Indian land tenure cases in the Belize Supreme Court.

Trained as an economic and ecological anthropologist, his initial research on farming and family organization in Belize was followed by research on consumer culture, globalization, television, and beauty pageants. At the same he has pursued research on energy consumption and consumer culture in the USA, and he was one of the first anthropologists to connect consumer culture with climate change. His work on food questions the history and recent evolution of global supply chains. His most recent book is “Rice and Beans,” co-edited with Livia Barbosa, and a textbook on the anthropology of everyday life, co-authored by Orvar Lofgren and Billy Ehn, coming out in a few months.

Managing “diversity” in the workplace: The inclusion of foreign workers in Japanese companies

Organised by Division of Sociology, in collaboration with Centre of Modern Languages (the Japanese Program) and Chinese Heritage Centre

Speaker: Professor Soo Im Lee

Date: Friday, 13 March 2015

Time: 3:00pm – 5:00pm
Venue: Chinese Heritage Centre, Auditorium (Level 2)

Abstract:
This study has a three-fold purpose. Firstly, it aims to illuminate who exactly highly skilled foreigners are in Japanese business contexts. Secondly, it attempts to investigate the work environments of highly skilled foreign professionals at Japanese companies. Thirdly, it attempts to conceptualize and explore the characteristics of Japan’s version of “diversity management” and suggest how the Japanese managerial level effectively utilizes human diversity as a driving force towards increased competitiveness. This study discovered several key challenges foreign workers face in Japan. Firstly, foreign workers have a difficult time conforming to Japanese office culture as they are expected to enact the “ideal Japanese worker” by accepting values such as unpaid overtime and strict hierarchy among workers. Secondly, due to the glass ceiling women and foreign workforce face in Japanese companies, there is a lack of diversity in the management level. The homogenous nature of Japanese managers, which consists of men from a specific age group, makes it more difficult for diversity management to be effective. In order for Japanese companies to be able to practice diversity management in the business context, it is important to see changes in the broader perspectives in regards to immigration policies and cross-cultural education.

About the speaker:

Dr. Lee is Professor of the Department of Business Administration at Ryukoku University, Kyoto, Japan, researching on diversity in Education, minority issues and multiculturalism in Japan. She is actively working to improve the human rights of foreign residents in Japan and she currently serves as a member of the local government committees for policies on foreign residents. In 2008, she was selected as a Fellow of the Asia Leadership Fellow Program by the International House of Japan and the Japan Foundation, that was the first selection of Korean Japanese as a Japan’s representative by the program. She is a naturalized citizen of Korean descent (third generation) in Japan and she is tackling actively an exploration of citizenship and diversity in the Japanese society as examined in her books, Japan's Diversity Dilemmas: Ethnicity, Citizenship, and Education, 2006, and Global jidai no nishon shakaito kokuseki, [Japanese society and nationality in the global age], 2007. Lee has explored the decades-long experience of Koreans in Japan: the early migration during the colonial period; the loss of Japanese nationality at the end of World War II.

Collective Memory, Multidisciplinary, Public Sociology: China and Japan's Islands of Contention

Speaker: Prof Tim F. Liao, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Date: Friday, 16 January 2015
Time: 3:00pm
Venue: Chinese Heritage Centre, NTU (Level 2)

Abstract

This talk introduces the audience to a forthcoming book, The China-Japan Border Dispute: Islands of Contention in Multidisciplinary Perspective (2015, edited by Liao, Hara, and Wiegand, in Ashgate’s series on Rethinking Asia and International Relations). Eight scholars from history, international relations, law, political science, and sociology analyze the difficult dispute and make some recommended solutions. The talk then focuses on a particular chapter in the book, an analysis of descriptions of the relevant history of the islands found at the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s and the Japanese Foreign Ministry’s websites and at the People’s Daily and the Asahi Shimbun websites. This research seeks to understand the differences in collective memory formation in these two countries. By emphasizing and resorting to different periods of history, China and Japan stage their respective territorial claims. The research shows that to produce a convincing territorial claim, both China and Japan form collective historical memory about the islands through enhancing rhetorical force, resonance, and range of reference in memory formation as shown at their websites even though they may intend to target different audiences for their respective collective memory projects.

About the speaker

Tim F. Liao is Professor of Sociology & Professor of Statistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. At Illinois, he served as Head of the Department of Sociology from 2004 to 2009 and Acting Director of the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies from 2012 to 2013. His research interests range from quantitative methodology and social statistics to social and historical demography, visual studies with photography, and collective memory. He is Editor of Sociological Methodology (2009-2015). His recent publications include peer-reviewed journal articles on life course sequence visualization (Sociological Methods & Research), the social definition of time (Time & Society), and social stratification estimation (Journal of Royal Statistical Society). He has a forthcoming book in Ashgate’s series on “Rethinking Asia and International Relations” on the Diaoyu/Senkaku territorial dispute between China and Japan.

From Danmaxi to Xinjiapo: Ceramics and the Chinese in Singapore
Organised by Chinese Heritage Centre

Date : 14 May 2014
Time : 4pm - 5.30pm
Venue : CHC Auditorium, Level 2

Invited speakers: Prof John Miksic & Dr Matthew Bunney

Singapore's position as a vibrant port-city did not begin in 1819, but at least five centuries before, during the 14th century when the Singapore River was the site of an important emporium. The Dao Yi Zhi Lue by Wang Dayuan, together with two other texts, Nagarakertagama (or Desawarnana), a 14th century Javanese poem from East Java, and the Sejarah Melayu or Malay Annals, provided an insight of 14th century Singapore. The most significant contribution comes from archaeological evidence, especially artifacts such as Chinese ceramics and regional and locally produced pottery excavated from archaeological sites on Fort Canning Hill and the area on the east side of the Singapore River.
